Nataume’s Book of Friends & Gintama definitely needed some time to grow on me but that was like 2 seasons test lol.

Azumanga Daioh took a few episodes to hit its stride and flesh out the characters, having not seen any of the web shorts that were released prior to the anime.

The 5 episode test was sensible when the average anime season was 20+ episodes long, but seeing as 12 episodes is the standard now, I shouldn’t have to sit through half a season of crap to get to the good part… There are generally ways to make it more interesting earlier on. Not saying I won’t give it a chance though.
Anyone else notice a weird trend in anime starting off great but suddenly getting weird or boring the further you go in?
