      The most recent anime to air here is AOT, which premiered ~11 years ago. Given its popularity especially in the latter seasons, it is expected to be a modern classic.

      Interesting that Toradora is in here. Well it makes sense given how it is still a staple for romcom recommendations.

      Even if Haruhi is barely discussed these days, the popularity of the series, which probably paved way for light novel adaptations, is significant enough that it also deserves a spot here.

      It’s interesting Gigantor and Speed Racer didn’t make the list with Astro Boy.

    3. Kinda makes me smile how I’ve seen quite a few of these.

      Lacking a bit of OVAs from the 80’s & 90’s though.

      No Ninja Scroll? Tsk, tsk, tsk

    4. Wait. Chat is this real?!

      An actually decent list of what anime should be classics?!

      Has HFIL frozen over?!

    5. Not only is Evangelion on one, it also casually doubled place two – **Dragonballs** – amount of first ranks

      Fanta has never tasted that good

      Shockingly sane results, congratulations everyone. I also respect that some of these classics aren’t strictly speaking great shows but they are still certified classics.

      Probably an otaku would look at this list and go “where is x?” But x would probably be a heavily influential show with very low Western distribution. Fist of the North Star and Detective Conan would probably be considered baffling omissions

    7. Not present in the current one:

      * Your Name
      * Jojo
      * Kill la Kill
      * Spice and Wolf
      * OPM
      * YLIA
      * SAO
      * Fate/Zero

      Not present in the previous one:

      * Rose of Versaille
      * Nausicaa
      * GTO
      * Ranma
      * Space Battleship Yamato
      * Urusei Yatsura
      * Initial D
      * Yu Gi Oh

    8. Why do I only ever see results of these polls and never an ongoing poll?

      I want to participate and read discussions.

    9. That is a nice list

      Though I feel like you can tell where most of the r/anime users are from when other classics like Doraemon, Conan, Saint Seiya, City Hunter, Cat’s Eye… are pretty far down the top 100 or not there at all

    10. Every time the classics list comes up, I think it’d be a great recommendation thread but it ends up having stuff which I have already seen or knew about 😑😑.

      Out of 100 listed I have seen like 71 one of them and knew almost every anime out there.

    11. Excluding super mainstream anime like Demon Slayer or Jujutsu Kaisen, I can see Vinland Saga, Kaguya-sama: Love is War and Mob Psycho 100 sneaking onto this list in 10 years or so.

    12. Heda-of-Aincrad on

      A pretty good list, and I have a few of these on my PTW – mostly the sci-fi classics I missed when they first came out.

      Many of these series were hit or miss for me personally, like a few of my favorites making the list (AOT, Dragon Ball, Pokémon) and also an equal number of shows I didn’t enjoy. But there’s a nice variety of genres, so I think it has something for everyone.

    13. Not One Piece, it belongs in the trash. The only classic is it duping so many idiots in watching so much filler and them accepting it.

      I tried to rewatch GTO a few weeks ago, and it just hit different. It’s definitely dated and hasn’t aged well.

    15. Haruhi mentioned, it’s a good list.

      Also does it count if I watched Yamato 2199 but not the original?

    16. Very good all around. Would personally place 2010 as the arbitrary classics limit but that’s just my personal unreasonably strict bias. Very few that need to be disqualified according to my meaningless criteria. Good job with this one.

    17. Honestly pretty solid list. Only one i wouldn’t count is toradora but that’s just personal preference

    18. I have nitpicks of things I would add or take away (likely mostly based on personal preference), but overall this is pretty solid.

      Possible Adds:

      * Slayers franchise (Slayers NEXT is PEAK)
      * Rurouni Kenshin (Kyoto / Shishioh arc still the best shonen fighting arc of all time, series fell apart after that)
      * Spirited Away (but not at the expense of Totoro or Mononoke)

      Possible Subtracts:

      * Toradora (I watched it, it was good, but not enough to hit a GOAT list like this)
      * Yuyu Hakusho (would swap this out for Kenshin)
      * Berserk (anime does not so justice to the manga but I know this one a lot of people liked)

    19. Seems like a good list

      For me, i might add something from the Fate series. Also, i genuinely think Kimetsu no Yaiba, JJK, and Freiren will all be classics when they have finished their runs.
