Just got back from the movies! I think this was a slightly above average movie that managed to hit all the dots, without anything feeling *too* rushed and dragged out.

Events were mostly predictable, and overall a feel good-ish SOL-drama story, though I’m interested in what everyone thought of Azuma, who, by her own admission, was manipulative and a bit of a dick. The movie tries its best to redeem her a bit, and she did reflect and turned out better for it, and well i guess overall NEWS is NEWS because of her and the group is fun, but idk, i can’t bring myself to like her that much in the end. Everyone else is fine and the story felt pretty realistic and grounded (for an idol anime).

Above average animation, good transitions between 3D and 2D during the idol sequence and overall a decent spend of time at the big screen. I probably won’t recommend this one too highly, but it can be a good watch when you want something short and relatively low stakes as the runtime is just 90 mins. Kinda like a worse “Her Blue Sky”

I’d give it a 6.5/10. Azuma is kind of a bitch, but at least by the end she knows it. A few of the story beats I could definitely see coming, but the build up was good enough. The CG performance definitely felt like they cut to not linger on the 3D models too long, but it did its job. Would compare it to the performance scenes in s1 Zombieland Saga.

I do think the rest of NEWS was a bit too easily forgiving but it’s not a huge deal. Overall plot was still enjoyable, and seeing all of NEWS and photographer guy 10 years later as successful adults was a good touch.

I think it’s gonna be one of those films that goes on Crunchyroll a few months down the line that people generally think is fine but nothing groundbreaking.

    3. 6/10 for me. i think this could’ve been better as a series rather than a 90 minute film. the pacing was pretty all over the place

animation and voice acting was great, however. with the exception of the CGI dances, those were kinda average and you could definitely tell when they were switching from 2d to 3d

nothing too memorable and i probably won’t be rewatching this, but i won’t say i regret watching it (except for maybe the $20 for the ticket which was noticeably more than what anime movies usually cost)

Interesting take on the idol genre, but couldn’t pick a lane between delightful sol or cynical character drama and so ended up a little bit mushy. I certainly enjoyed the first third of movie when they were setting up the characters and the beginnings of the manipulations rather than the idol training and downfall that follows it. It is notable that a member of an idol group wrote the novel that this was based on.

Animation was overall fine, with a few beautiful shots, mostly serviceable animation and some awkward 3DCG jank. Some of the 3DCG was quite good, in particular the composition of a Sony branded camera that was noticeably of higher quality, but there were some rough moments, like a bad CG background for a walking scene that was distracting and some CG props like the video cameramen during the first idol performance that ruined that number for me.
