My favourite show of 2021 and an absolute masterpiece from Naoko Yamada which sadly to this day is still very much underwatched.

Man what a good soundtrack and animation , but I always dislike watching historical anime, especially if the people being portrayed famously met a horrible end. The same thing happened when I watched rose of Versailles

It’s really unfortunate how under-watched it is as a series, especially for how impossibly valuable it is as emotional storytelling for Yamada as her (proper) return to anime post KyoAni. Really wonderful stuff that I’m hopeful will get more attention thanks to Yamada’s recent movies.

This anime and later G-Witch made me realize how great Aoi Yuki is at voicing calm, cynical characters who can turn into feral little gremlins at any moment. Which is funny since until then I mainly knew her as Madoka. Girl’s got range.

Three years ago on this very day the first episode of **Heike Monogatari** ([MAL](https://myanimelist.net/anime/49738/Heike_Monogatari?), [AL](https://anilist.co/anime/138714/The-Heike-Story/)) was released on streaming services and the show has yet to free me from its grip.
