    2. I was worried that the episode format would ruin the experience of Tokyo Blade, but it was totally worth it for the Melt focus. I’m glad he’s not just a one-off character.

    3. mr_miscellaneous123 on

Holy shit, seeing the actual performance of the stage play is so cool! Especially seeing it from the audience’s perspective.

I wonder if they could release a full version of the Tokyo Blade performance without any cuts.

    4. Aqua casually setting up the stage for Melt’s redemption arc to get his revenge plot going.

    5. The way they do performances is interesting compared to the live action plays, musicals, operas, and such I’ve seen lol. Fun sword fight. Wew that animation. This lil song bit for Act 2 reminds me of like… Suikoden or so. Wonder how much we didn’t see of Act 1.

Yep, fine actor, scumbag person. Good for Melt to have such backing. Good for him and his hard work. Middle school? That’s messed. Good for him to have serious regrets and care though. Hehe Aqua with the best advice. Essentially turn your weakness into a strength. That was totally awesome, yep. Look how happy Akibo-sensei is, cute. Also nice to see him relate with his character. The animation is just so great this season. Love the flare and style. The reaction of everyone is so great too.

Man, this episode flew by and we haven’t even gotten to Aqua and Akane and such yet. Nice to see Melt getting along with castmates too.

    6. discuss-not-concuss on

      REDEMPTION arc? let’s goo

Melt really took the advice from Aqua and gave it his all, even impressing the cock-sucker and the manwhore.

Kichijouji-sensei went from disgust/ despair to being touched while Abiko-sensei is getting giddy from his superhuman stunt

    7. Seriously…. HOLY S**T. A Melt-focused episode that freaking delivered with top-tier, cinematic-level animation and AMAZING character development for Melt to reach the acting level of Aqua/Kana/Akane/Kamoshida.

You could truly see how much remorse/insecurity he’s been facing from Tokyo Blade, how he’s truly been pouring ever ounce of effort and his own pain into Kizami, and therefore it’s so damn cathartic for him to blow far past the expectations of his largest critic (Yoriko-sensei) and even the incredibly particular manga author (Abiko-sensei).

I never thought I’d be this stunned by an Oshi no Ko episode, but this series continues to surprise and impress me far beyond what I’ve anticipated. A visual spectacle underscored by absolutely well-crafted storytelling and undoubtedly powerful character writing.

<I give this episode a serious standing ovation>

    8. Oh my god the animation for this went way harder than I expected it to. I had faith in the studio living up to the high expectations for this arc, but man

    9. DidYouReadTheNIRC on

A lot of fans tend to place most of the importance to the revenge plot of Oshi No Ko, but these character arcs like Melt’s are just as vital to the series. They don’t really affect the “bigger picture” of the story, but they’re just as compelling because they remind us of what made Ai’s character so moving in the first place.

    10. this is basically Melt episode, and they even went that far to make his evolution scene theatrical, like it so dramatic that I dont know what is the meaning behind every scene still left in awe. Melt redemption arc, even Yoriko-sensei approve it.

This episode is so kino, I hope they still left some budget for Sayahime. I want to see Akane acting like that, + super soundtrack + color + lighting + everybest thing that animator could present.

    11. Wow, what a fantastic episode.

Melt’s growth is awesome to see. It’s impossible to reach the level of the talent around him in such a short time, but Aqua’s great advice gave him the opportunity to show that his hard work can put on a great performance as well. The flip to catch the sword was epic and the drew me in as it drew the crowd in as well, conveying the frustration of his character by drawing from his own was just on the icing on top.

Yoriko was, understandably, the most critical of him and it makes me happy that he was able to draw emotion from her. Well deserved for his efforts.

Also, very cool animation from the team to show Melt’s growth and his transformation into his character. It gave me some reminiscent feelings to All Might going plus ultra, or Todo using the power of friendship. Truly stellar overall.

    12. ObvsThrowaway5120 on

It annoys me even more that Kamoshida is actually a good actor. The guy’s a massive tool but I guess he’s just all talk. Probably why he acts like a massive wanker.

I’m cheering on Melt. Dude is actually a pretty decent guy and I appreciate how hard he’s been working to get better. He might not have been very good, but I think his fight scene with Kamoshida was pretty damn good. Bro totally stole the show in that moment when he basically became the character.

    13. That development of Melt in the span of an episode.

Goes from feeling totally outclassed by his peers to knocking it out of the park on stage. Also, that animation that unfolds when he goes “I won’t lose to anyone,” the abstract elements used as well as the mix of colors leads to a mesmerizing scene. Then, he gets praised by Sakuya after for the emotion he put in.

[Side note by the way, I recently went to an Oshi no Ko collaboration cafe](https://imgur.com/a/7Izm3yl)

    14. Se7en_Sinner on

Yoriko’s crying because she’s thinking “Where the hell was THIS Melt during *Sweet Today*.”

    15. ModieOfTheEast on

Damn, they went all out for Melt already. Really excited for the the whole Akane, Kana and Aqua moments then. I also like that they gave a short overview of the story in the beginning. It wasn’t really necessary to get the plot of the second half, but it was nice to see how they utilized the screen. From it just being background to it being pre-filmed scenes that then directly blend into the next scene. Only thing I am still hoping to see is how the whole 360° rotation is utilized best. I am not sure if the scene with Tsurugi and Blade walking in the fields used that part, but it didn’t seem like it because I feel then they would have stayed at the same position in relation to the viewers. But maybe the rotation has a different speed. Still looking forward to what will come in the next episodes.

    16. SticcTheGreat on

God i bet aka is tearing up like yoriko. This shit marvelous. Have to clap after the episode ends.

    17. standardcodec on

      **MELT REDEEMED**

HOLY FUCK WHAT DID I JUST WATCH???? THEY WENT INSANE WITH THE DIRECTION THAT I HAVE TO WATCH IT FOR A SECOND TIME.

EDIT: I DIDN’T EVEN NOTICE THE EPISODE IS 25:31 MINS LONG

    18. We’ve finally caught up to the prologue as the Tokyo Blade play debuts as we get to see it right with the audience!

Himekawa is playing Blade like your typical Kouki Uchiyama Shonen lead but dang it if Kana isn’t having the time of her life playing Tsurugi. Also that stunt and wirework is phenomenal!

(I honestly didn’t realize Akane and Aqua et all are the Oni antagonists of this series…)

But as great as the other actors are, this is an episode about Kizami…or Melt, as he tries to make the most of his acting and compete with Kamoshida and his past, mediocre, self and prove that there’s value in him as an actor.

Melt has had it easy for most of his life, coasting on his good looks. He scored with a hot 3rd year girl, the ladies came to love him, and he knew how to maximize his popularity. So acting should’ve been a breeze right? Up until he screwed up on Sweets Today so badly that he was as ashamed of his performance as anyone, and realized he had to improve rather than continue to be this pathetic in front of other more talented actors.

And Kaburagi saw his potential. Is he an acting prodigy? No. But he’s willing to put the work and effort in, and sometimes that’s enough.

Of course his biggest critic is Kichijoji, who still sees him as a mediocre actor bringing down the play like he did with her own work, and the audience starts to agree with her. Kamoshida definitely doesn’t see more to him than someone physically fit.

But Kana respectet his effort and Aqua told him exactly what he needed to hear…even if he is the most mediocre actor, if he can put all his talent into ONE moment after lulling the audience into a false sense of security with his lack of talent, then that’s all that will matter. So how about pulling off a crazy stunt move straight out of the manga that no one would’ve expected him to pull off?

And when Melt is able to connect with Kizami, really connect with his characters’ feelings, he’s able to channel an intensity and strength, even in defeat, that truly overwhelms even Kamoshida. In his minds eye he goes from his shallow past self to someone chasing a star and embodying that in becoming his character.

The way Kana and Himekawa came in felt like not only their characters saving Kizami but the pair of them acknowledging Melt’s efforts, and even Kichijoji is genuinely moved, and now Kamoshida respects him! Even Aqua is smiling at Melt’s successful efforts!

    19. Damn, someone cooked with that Melt montage, my favorite part is the blood from the hand dropping, and it looks like he is born from it, implying the hard work.

    20. MELTBROS WE FUCKING WON!!! HOLYSHIT IT WAS GLORIOUS!!!

Been waiting to see his spotlight scene animated. Even if it was a brief moment, dude fucking owned it. Also the “he’s just like me fr” bit still hit as hard here. Daga kobo fucking cooked, goddamn.

The ~~odm gear~~ wire rigging for the actors jumping/flying was really cool to see.

Watching all this makes me wish we’re in the timeline where nobody did any fucked up shit and act-age would have kept going. Galactic railroad and princess ironfan would have been goated. The author really robbed us all, especially uzasaki sensei. I missed her arts so much.

    21. SurePaleontologist76 on

No i refuse to believe this episode is real, Holy shit they cooked

I love melt so fucking much

    22. Apologies for my tardiness, and welcome back to another week of OnK trivia!

      About Gap Moe

The gap experience is when what you expect from what you see is far, far away from what you get. When a positive effect of this experience is observed in people, it is often known as ‘gap moe’, of which the 3 main kinds of gaps are: a. the gap between first impressions and their actual character b. the gap in their behaviour between different situations, times, and places c. the deviation or mismatch from their ‘archetype’

[Some examples have already been listed by Aqua in the episode](https://imgur.com/a/bYZf0P2), but other examples of gap moe include:

      1. The quiet girl in your class suddenly cursing at the class bully in an uncharacteristic fit of anger
      2. Dangerous-looking men who love smol animals like kittens
      3. Susan Boyle on Britain’s got Talent
      4. Virtual youtubers switching between their normal ~~artificially~~ high-pitched voice and a low-pitched mellow voice, especially while singing (read: Anemori Luna and Sakamata Chloe)

The key part is that the gap is what makes the person who displays it likeable and the experience especially enjoyable, respectively. For example, in example 1, the girl’s ability to spout vulgarities is only made special by the fact that you would never expect that from her.

Conversely, such a gap can also result in strong negative feelings, generally from the feeling of betrayal. For example:

      1. People who were portrayed as good at first but later revealed to be evil, as opposed to villains who are shown to be evil from start to end.
      2. NTR

Some academics have theorized this kind of attraction is caused by the “gain-loss theory”, in which a negative opinion turned into a positive one will result in a stronger relationship rather than a positive initial opinion, and vice versa. Others call it the “Halo Effect”, a cognitive bias in which there is a tendency for positive impressions of a person, company, brand or product in one area to positively influence one’s opinion or feelings in other areas”. The opposite is called the “Horn effect” in which the result is a negative influence instead.

Not to be confused with the thigh gap. –oldpier

    24. Did not expect Melt’s redemption to be so beautifully animated. Like Doga Kobo literally went hard on even his EYELASHES

    25. God I fucking love Melt. What a masterwork of an episode. Well deserved for our boi.

    26. Typical-Ad123 on

They’re doing this arc justice, it’s honestly quite overwhelming how amazing this adaptation is, above and beyond my already high expectations for it. Extremely excited for Akane – Kana scenes!!
